Specialist-level exam preparation materials for MPerio, FPerio and DSFE Periodontics candidates, including solved written papers, 3,000+ MCQs and SBAs, viva and structured oral questions, clinical case discussions, textbook-based summaries and exam-focused revision handouts.
Understand the different assessment formats used across MPerio, FPerio and DSFE Periodontics examinations. Learn how written questions, MCQs and SBAs, viva examinations and clinical structured oral assessments require different preparation strategies.
The examination pathways use different assessment structures. MPerio/FPerio examinations have traditionally incorporated written and oral/viva-based assessment, whereas the newer DSFE Periodontics pathway is divided into Part 1 and Part 2, using Single Best Answer (SBA) assessment followed by a Clinical Structured Oral (cSO) examination. Candidates should always check the current regulations for their specific examination before preparing
Our MPerio/FPerio written preparation materials include solved written examination papers from 2017 through the most recent examination, together with textbook-based exam handouts and structured revision material. These resources help candidates review recurring examination themes, understand the expected depth of specialist knowledge and practise structured written responses.
MPerio/FPerio viva preparation includes comprehensive viva questions and complete clinical case discussions covering assessment, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, investigations, prognosis, treatment planning, evidence-based management, complications and supportive periodontal care. The materials are designed to develop systematic clinical reasoning and structured oral responses.
DSFE Periodontics Part 1 currently consists of two written papers containing 90 Single Best Answer (SBA) questions each. Each paper lasts two hours, questions contain five answer options, and there is no negative marking. The assessment emphasizes application of knowledge and higher-order clinical reasoning rather than simple factual recall
SBA questions require candidates to select the single most appropriate answer from several plausible options. Clinical scenarios may require interpretation of findings, images or investigation results and application of specialist knowledge to diagnosis, prognosis, treatment or patient management. Preparation therefore requires both knowledge and clinical reasoning.
DSFE Part 2 uses a Clinical Structured Oral (cSO) assessment. Candidates are assessed through clinical scenarios requiring them to interpret information, formulate diagnoses and demonstrate appropriate clinical judgement, treatment planning and patient management.
Written preparation primarily tests knowledge and its application through written questions, MCQs or SBAs. Viva and clinical structured oral preparation additionally requires candidates to verbalize their reasoning, interpret clinical information systematically, justify decisions and respond appropriately to follow-up questions. For this reason, our materials include both written and case-based oral preparation resources.
Specialist periodontology examinations assess more than factual knowledge. Candidates are expected to demonstrate clinical reasoning, diagnosis, interpretation of investigations, risk assessment, prognosis, treatment planning, evidence-based decision-making and management of complex periodontal and peri-implant cases. Oral and case-based components additionally assess the candidate's ability to explain and justify clinical decisions clearly
